Tourists score 10 tries
The New Zealand Universities rugby team maintained its unbeaten record in Japan with an entertaining 51-6 victory over Japan "B" at Shizuoka on Saturday night. For the second time in three matches, the tourists scored 10 tries and once again the 20-year-old Waikato University first fiveeighth. Mark Cameron, was heavily among the points. Cameron. a former Taranaki schoolboys representative. scored two tries, converted four and kicked a penalty to add 19 points to the 35 he scored in the team's 59-8 opening match win against Kantor.
But according to the side’s manager. Dick Hockley yesterday, the most memorable action’ was provided by the left wing. Craig Pullar (Lincoln). who turned defence into attack and scored a grand solo try mid-way through the first half. The match was played before an estimated 6000 spectators in ideal conditions. Mr Hockley said that after the 13-0 win over Japanese Universities last week, it had been.decided there was little to be gained in trying to keep the ball among the forwards. "We gbt the ball back to the backs quite a bit quicker last night and didn’t really
give the opposition much of a chance." he said. Scorers tor New Zealand Universities were: Pullar (2). Cameron (2). Mark Meates (Canterbury) (2). Miles Hughes (Massey).. Dave Rutherford (Victoria). Ned Howard (Otago). Craig McDowell (Canterbury) tries. Cameron a penalty and four conversions. The New Zealand team moved to Tokyo yesterday to prepare for its final two matches against the touring combined English Universities side on Thursday and All Japan next Sunday. Mr Hockley said that the combined English Universities side was likely to be the hardest opponent, but added: "We regard both as equally important."
