Assurance sought on milling

Conservationists have asked the Minister of Lands, Mr Elworthy, for “straightforward assurance” that the National Parks Act will not be changed to allow milling. The director of the Joint Campaign on Native Forests, Mr Guy Salmon, said that the recommended replacement of the National Parks and Reserves Authority with a new commission, as part of a merger plan between the Forest Service and Lands and Survey Department, had caused public concern about the future of national parks. Mr Elworthy had also said that he could foresee a time when the authority policy allowed taking limited amounts of native timber from national parks, Mr Salmon said. “I invite him to give a straightforward assurance that he does not intend to tamper with the National Parks Act,” said Mr Salmon in a press statement. Neither the present act nor the authority allowed the adoption of a “timber exploitation" policy.
