$40,000 yacht a gift
PA Wellington A Wellington photographer, Mr Jim Siers, will give a 15m catamaran worth $40,000 to the village of Ribene and the small atoll of Abaiang in Kiribati. The gift is a thank-you from Mr Siers for help given to him in the past by the village. It is. also a cooperative development pro-
ject to which many New Zealand companies, unions and voluntary organisations have contributed. Mr Siers first came across Ribene when it volunteered to help with his first Taratai raft voyage across the Pacific. On his second raft voyage. a villager came with im and his young son, Conrad. They were wrecked near Niue and the Islander played
a big part in their subsequent survival and rescue. Mr Siers said that the yacht, which will have an engine, will carry cargo between Abaiang and the main atoll of Tarawa. The job is done at the movement by a smaller canoe named the Jim Siers. “It will change their lives but I hope for the better." he said.
