Rugby referees defended

PA Wellington The chairman of the New •Zealand Rugby Referees Appointment Board, Mr Pat Gill, has defended referees in the face of recent criticism. “It’s very easy to attack referees, and it seems to me that much recent criticism has come from losing coaches,” he said at a meeting in Wellington of the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union. “The facts are that referees are trying their hardest and they are constantly watched and assessed on their performances. “I am genuinely concerned at the criticism being levelled, and feel not all of it is justified.” Mr Gill admitted there were instances of laws not being fully carried out, particularly the policing of offside at scrums, lineouts, rucks and mauls. “The referees appointment board is looking at this problem. We feel the laws are, in some circumstances, not being carried out strictly to the law book.”
