Daffodills

Sir. — At this time of year citizens of Christchurch look forward to sharing the annual joy of daffodills by the acre in our woodland. Such splendid beauty is marred by the selfish few who seem to steal blooms from the public with impunity. During the last two springs thieves have been apprehended in the woodland. May thieves steal for a third season? Is it worth while for council staff and honorary inspectors to be alert? Would the council appreciate and back their efforts? Has senior management of the city adequately instructed on what action should be taken? — Yours, etc.. M. J. MATHEWS. August 22, 1982.

(Mr J. H. Gray, General Manager and Town Clerk, replies: "The parks department's full-time rangers have been fully instructed on their responsibilities with regard to

theft of daffodils in the woodland. Honorary wardens have not been instructed as a group for some time although when new wardens are appointed they are given a copy of the by-law and have their duties explained to them, these being to point out to the public that they are offending and then to report the offence to the department."]
