Rolleston centre closing
Sir, — The Minister of Justice deserves community support for . his decision to close the corrective training centre at.Rolleston — one of five Canterbury prisons. The decision is a’bold and forthright
step towards implementing the Government's penal policy review. by reducing the total number of prison beds. The decision will mean that the community at large has to accept more responsibility for the issue of crime and its causes. The Minister's decision can be justified on social and economic grounds as evidenced by high escape rates, low occupancy numbers and inadequate facilities. Hopefully the savings made will be put into community facilities thereby reducing further the country's high imprisonment rate. — Yours, etc., M. J. CREE, Chairman, Salisbury Street Foundation. September 6, 1982.
