Riccarton racecourse

Sir, — Mr Aim (August 19) overlooks what, to my mind, is your correspondent’s most serious criticism. What incentive is there to go to the course to see some 20 or 30 minutes action when' it is spread over six hours, with waits of up to three quarters of an hour between events. Racing clubs do not merit more favourable treatment from the Government - while they fail so totally to_ realise that they are in the entertainment industry. Almost every major racing country except New Zealand presents eight-race programmes of four hours or less duration. Not every racing enthusiast regards the extra two hours Riccarton takes up as bonus drinking and gambling time, tYours, etc.

M. T. LANGER. August. 19, 1982.
