PA Nelson Miss Margaret Brown, who survived three years as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in Burma, quietly celebrated her hundredth birthday in Nelson on Tuesday.
Miss Brown, who was a nurse all her working life, served in both world wars. Her 'niece, Mrs Sheila Lester, said -that Miss Brown was nursing in Burma in 1942 when she was captured by the Japanese. The Japanese marched the prisoners up and down Burma for three years and when she reached India after the war, Miss Brown weighed only 28.5 kg.
In World War I, she accompanied the first landing at the Dardenelles and of 16 nurses, only one other survived.
