Swim records fall
Five Canterbury short-course swimming records were broken at two separate carnivals at the week-end. Haydn Woolley I New Brighton) broke three of the records, two in the same event. At an open inter-club carnival at the Wharenui Pool on Saturday evening Woolley set a new time of Imin 15.3 s for the under--10 boys' 100 m freestyle. The time took o.Bs off the old' mark set 11 years ago by Paul Rowe. At a dual meet between Eastern Districts and the New Brighton club at the Ashburton Community pool yesterday. Woolley broke the record again by another 0.95. That time was Imin 14.45. At the same carnival Woolley broke his own record for the under-10 100 m breaststroke. His time of Imin 41.7 s took 1.4 s off the record he set two weeks ago. Kate Stokes (New Brighton)
broke her own under-10 100 m breaststroke record, also set two weeks ago. Her new. time of Imin 39.55. was 0.5 s better than the old mark. Shane Ellison (Wharenui) set a new time for the boys under 12 4 x 33'im medley at the Wharenui carnival on Saturday. He recorded Imin 51.85, 0.7 s faster than the old mark set by Philip Kirkpatrick in 1972. Six Canterbury senior 25m short-course records set at the national winter championships recently have been approved. Grant F’orbes set new times for the 100 and 200 m breaststroke of Imin 7.3 s and 2min 28.75; Grant Gillard set a new 100 m backstroke time of Imin 0.45; Andrew O’Donoghue, a 200 m freestyle record of Imin 58.05: and Jennifer Queen. 100 and 200 m freestyle records of Imin o.ls and 2min B.Bs.
