Selfishness

Sir,—Having listened to "Insight 82” and watched "Newsmakers" on Sunday I am disappointed at the selfishness of those involved in the Clyde dispute — indicative of the growing selfishness of New Zealanders. James McNeish was once quoted as saying we were a passionless people, but perhaps since then we have

become a race of selfish people, thinking only of what we can get out of society and not what we can put back. Examples of this selfishness exist in all aspects of our society, from politicians who insist they are right, at the expense of the people they supposedly represent, to the selfishness of the companies which put profits . ahead of principles, to the selfishness of those who expect society should provide a roof over their heads, and wage-packets. Accepting that life is hard, we should attempt to make it more bearable by being less selfish. — Yours, etc.. PETER KENNEDY. July 13, 1982.
