Air pollution
Sir,—My letter of June 13 unfortunately wrongly spelt Count Rumford’s name. He was perhaps better known as Sir Benjamin Thompson and from 1795 devoted himself, to the problem of smoke abatement. — Yours, etc., . PATRICK NEARY. July 13, 1982.
Sir, — 1 hasten to reassure Patrick Neary (July 13) that the purpose of my quote was not to denigrate Victorian scientists but rather to ridicule the pomposity of “Nature.” There was no “New Scientist” in those days. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. July 13, 1982.
