Private hospitals

Sir,—l was so pleased to read the articles ("The Press," July 9) questioning the wisdom and economics of the growth of the private hospital system. I hope they stimulate widespread public discussion and awareness of just what proportion of our G.N.P. is now being devoted to "health." Economics aside, increasingly I hear distressing tales of patients receiving curt.- abrupt, even rude and humiliating receptions from specialists in the public system, learning only that they will have .to wait for treatment.. These same patients are then overwhelmed -by the warmth and courtesy, total respect and complete understanding they receive from specialists when they resort to the private system. Also what overwhelms them is the fact that the specialist will be the same person they saw before.—Yours. etc., D. McARTHUR. July 11, 1982.
