Equal votes for ratepayers

Sir,—When at long 'last an inequality in the law has a chance to be righted, I ani saddened that your editorial

supports the status quo (July 12). The law can hardly be said to treat all equally if it provides only one joint-owner to be nominated as ratepayer. If it were equal both would be nominated. The law should not only be just but appear just. Lawyers seldom given clients the option when registering a jointly-owned property. The system is at present "thoroughly distorting.” Men predominate as ratepayers, though women often predominate as residents,- and few women joint-home owners are registered ratepayers. Yet women are elevated to equal responsibility in paying rates. People living or. working in a district surely have the greatest stake in its development. It would indeed be fairer to abolish the ratepayer category than to perpetuate an inequality to which you seem insensitive. — Yours, etc., B. ROBERTS. July 13. 1982.
