Air pollution
Sir, — It was incredible to read in your paper that Cr Garrett was quoted as not being convinced that Christchurch has an air pollution problem. Some years ago I was in Tokyo and the day after a typhoon the newspapers carried front page photographs of Mount Fuji, normally invisible because of the heavy air pollution but seen after hurricane force winds had temporarily cleared it away. Today a chance remark by a radio' announcer reminded me of this when he said it was temporarily possible to see the mountains again. Don’t let Christchurch end up like Tokyo; if necessary let us learn from it and other industrial cities before it is too late. Let us convince people like Cr Garrett, and anyone else necessary. to make Christchurch a smokeless zone, and guarantee a view of the mountains every day, and make hospitals and doctors’ surgeries free of pollution related illnesses. — Yours, etc. M. A. BARNETT. July 6, 1982. '
