No accord on shearing rates

Farmers and shearers have failed to agree on shearing rates in Canterbury this season. The South Island secretary of the Workers' Union, Mr Trevor Wearne, said that shearers would continue to work under the normal 15 per cent premium above the national award rate. An offer by Canterbury sheep-owners of an 8 per cent premium has been rejected by the union.

Mr W’earne said the farmers had offered no figures or evidence in support of the reduction. Another meeting might take place soon to discuss whether the farmers were agreeable to having a survey made this year on tallies shorn in Canterbury. Canterbury shearers have

had a premium in past years because of more difficult shearing conditions. A spokesman for the sheep-owners said; that their 8 per cent offer had' not changed The matter would probably be discussed al a meeting .soon.
