Suspicious fire at Rotorua school

PA Rotorua A suspicious fire caused several hundred thousand dollars damage at the Western Heights. High School in Rotorua yesterday morning. Four classrooms were gutted and’ another eight damaged by smoke and water. The blaze, which was in a two-storey block of 12 rooms, was spotted by staff at 7.45 a.m. v It was brought under control by firemen three-quar-ters of an hour later. At its height the blaze could be seen . throughout Rotorua. Flam.es leapt 10 metres above the building's roof. Seventy-two typewriters, duplicating machines, -and tape-recorders were troyed in the two top-floor typing rooms as was equipment in the technical drawing rooms. It was the first fire at the school this year, but came after seven suspicious minor fires in five weeks, in October and November last year. The Fire Service at Rotorua and the police regard the blaze as suspicious.
