Brisbane, last evening. / The result was a shattering end- to a most disappointing season for South. Ironically, it had begun promisingly last night when, in the fourth' minute, a finely-judged kick by Michael O’Donnell enabled the South centre. Bernie Green, to score the first try. But only'a few minutes later South’s errors allowed the new Brisbane centre. Bret French, to reply in kind and Colin Scott’s conversion gave Brisbane a 5-3 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Any doubt as to the outcome was extinguished when Brisbane ran in.another four tries to be in front. 21-3 at half-time. South; performed satisfactorily on a' territorial basis, but mistakes when in possession and on defence continued to haunt it. Wayne Dwyer, the South second-row forward had reason for pride in his own display, mustering a high tackle count and also impressing in possession. .. Scorers.— Brisbane 34 (Bret French two. Brad Scully two. Norm Carr, Tony Elliott. Colin Scott. Bryan Neibling tries; Scott four. Bruce Harry goals) beat South Island 3 (Bernie Green try).
