33 arrested after dawn raids
PA Auckland Thirty-three people were arrested in dawn drug raids yesterday by Auckland police and custom officers. The raids, which began at 5.30 a.m. and went on until late in the morning, were made by 75 uniformed and C;i.B. staff. The man who led/ them. Detective Senior-Sergeant G. R. Rutherford, of the Auckland police intelligence section, said 44 search warrants had been executed, mainly on the North Shore. Mr Rutherford said that cannabis, cannabis resin, and hashish with a total street value of about $30,000 was seized during the raids as well as about $2OOO worth of stolen electrical goods.
The raids followed many months of investigation, but Senior-Sergeant Rutherford declined to say whether an undercover policeman had been involved. One. person was arrested on a charge of supplying a class A drug, and three others for supplying a class B drug. They were in police- custody last evening. The rest of the charges related to offences dealing with the possession of class B and C drugs. Some 90 charges are pending as a result of the raids. Those arrested will appear in the District Court at Auckland and Takapuna today. Some appeared yesterday.
