Christchurch Girls’ High School

Sir, — Christchurch Girls’ High School, as a popular alternative to co-education, desperately needs rebuilding on its planned site. As a pupil of the school, I witness the increasing yearly influx of new girls, even in this time of collapsing national rolls. Restricting intake will reduce the amount of out-of-zone applications accepted and thus seriously jeopardise the existence of our hostel and shackle Christchurch families' freedom of choice. A proposed building on our existing site would riot solve our complete lack of recreational and sporting facilities. Besides, constructing around us means education on a noisy building site! A new structure to encase our schools’ excellent academic standards is still a dangling carrot before our sore eyes: no matter how hard we pull against the tether we cannot take a bite. Some members of our society it seems, will always be intent on making our new school merely a donkey's dream. — Yours, etc., JULIE HOLDEN. June 3, 1982.
