Hagley High School
Sir,—l do not really wish to become involved in an argument with Julia Fitzgerald over my use of the word “sexist" as I applied it to Christchurch Girls' High School. Hagley High School’s survival should not come down to Hagley versus Christchurch Girls’ High School. All schools should work together towards a reasonable compromise in the face of the Government's cost-cutting exercises. However, I find Ms Fitzgerald's (June 2) assertions, and implications about co-educational schools, absurd. At Hagley High, females take chemistry, pure maths and physics quite freely. They also take metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing. As many females as males are involved in the student leadership of the school. Also, males take cooking, sewing and typing. — Yours, etc., J. T. DOYLE. June 4, 1982.
