5000 metre record broken

NZPA Eugene, Oregon Mary Decker-Tabb shattered 'New Zealander Ann Audain’s women’s 5000 metres world record time yesterday when she ran 15m 8.26 s at the Prefontaine Classic track and field meet in Eugene. Oregon. Mrs Audain set the former world record of 15m 13.22 s in March. Mrs Tabb, the Athletics West representative from Eugene, who has had a cold for about a week, said, “I felt nice and relaxed for a

change. I let someone else lead. I was surprised I felt as good as I did. “My strategy was to stay with the leaders and, over the last mile, see how I felt. Thanks to Paula Fudge, I got through at a nice pace,” she said. Mrs Tabb and Miss Fudge, of Britain, traded the lead during the first half of the race, then Mrs Tabb got in front for good. Miss Fudge ran second in 15m 19.635. Mrs Tabb set five indoor records at a mile and 3000 metres in six meets last northern winter.
