Tenders sought for resiting new college
Parliamentary reporter Tenders are now being called for the construction of buildings in the first stage of re-establishing Cromwell College on a site in the new Cromwell township. The new college, which will adjoin a proposed recreation reserve, will move on to the new site next year. Both school pupils and the community will use the complex and joint development will avoid duplication and achieve the most economic result.
Announcing the calling of tenders, the member of Parliament for Otago, Mr W. E. Cooper, said that the initial stage would provide three blocks, containing 18 classrooms, staff and administration, accommodation, and ancillary facilities for a roll of 400 pupils. This will be supplemented by a large college-commun-
ity gymnasium which the Ministry of Works and Development will provide. Development of the grounds will begin soon to avoid any delay in construction of the buildings once satisfactory tenders have been received.
When the college has vacated its existing site and buildings, they will be used by the Cromwell Primary School, at present on a restricted site.
"The complex, as part of the community structure, results from the Gov'ernment’s decision to proceed with scheme F (of the hydro development plan)," Mr Cooper said. “The inundation of the land in the gorge and the Cromwell area has presented a series of new construction projects beneficial to Cromwell and its residents,” said Mr Cooper.
