The economy
Sir, — New Zealand looks to be in a grim state — thousands of people unemployed, massive cuts occuring in the health, education, and other welfare areas, the latest being the elimination of the Student Community Service programme and the cut of teachers' college students to the rate of other students. Meanwhile we learn that the new Government tax proposals are going to hit the needy even more while the large corporations actually make profits through the tax system thanks to rebates and export incentives. At the same time we are being told that we need to flood the Clutha River for even more electricity to establish “Think Big" projects. But those big corporations are not going to pay for all the energy costs, but rather you and I through our power bills. No wonder this government has to use the National Development Act when it knows that its growth strategy is not in the interests of the New Zealand people but rather in the interests of a small and increasingly rich elite. — Yours, etc., GRAHAM HARVEY. June 2,1982.
