Patriotism

Sir. — I stand corrected by C. P. Denny (June 2). Actually Johnson described a patriot as a sincere, steady, rational and unbiased friend to the interests and prosperity of his King and country, according to Boswell.

There was in the same political pamphlet “The Patriot” amidst powerful arguments not only a considerable portion of sophistry but a contemptuous ridicule of his opponents which was very provoking. For my part I tend to think as William Cowper that “Patriots are grown too shrewd to be sincere. and we too wise to trust them.” — Yours, etc., W. J. McKay. June 2, 1982.
