Pope’s visit to U.K.
Sir,—Unlike N. G. Ward (June 2) I have yet to see Pope John Paul II bringing about peace in any conflict. There is a great deal of pious talk on his part which the masses believe too easily, but nothing of any value is seen. If he were able, no doubt the extremely unhappy conflict in Northern Ireland would have ended long ago. More than pomp and emotion are needed here, and this is what we get, wherever the Pope sets foot. Kissing the soil is hardly what the people of Britain need at the moment. The open Bible is; and incidentally has anyone ever seen the Pope of Rome with one in his hand? — Yours, etc.. A. DELHANTY. June 2. 1982.
