Hagley High School
Sir,—ln reply to J. T. Doyle (May 28) referring to Christchurch Girls’ High School as sexist and elitist, the school is no more sexist than any other single-sex school: the only way it is sexist is that there are no male pupils. It is less sexist than many co-ed schools because there is no pressure for girls not to take traditionally “male” subjects. If a girl chooses to take chemistry, pure maths, or.physics in the senior forms she is not ridiculed or pressured out of that choice as might happen'at co-ed schools. At a single-sex school a girl is able to develop her own identity as a woman, without peer group pressure 1 forcing her into a sex stereotype. She learns leadership skills and responsibility also, as there are no males to take these roles within the school. — Yours, etc., ;
