Thorpe suffers broken jaw
Country will be without its Canterbury lock, Tony Thorpe, for Monday's TownCountry rugby match at Lancaster Park.
Thorpe suffered a broken jaw, in two places, while playing for Country against Mid-Canterbury at Leeston on Wednesday.
The jaw was to have been wired yesterday arid Thorpe will not be able to play again for about five weeks. This is bad luck for him, as it puts paid to whatever chance he had of winning New Zealand Colts selection this season. It also means that the Canterbury selector, Alex Wyllie, is back to square one in his search for a locking partner for Albert Anderson. Canterbury has at least four games before Thorpe will be fit to play again, and after his fine debut against Queensland last month
Thorpe seemed certain to be retained.
Thorpe's place in the Country pack has been taken by Eddie Kerr, of Lincoln. There is only one other change from the side that took the field against MidCanterbury, Ross Loffhagen replacing Don Rennie on the side of the scrum.
The team is: Neil Heffernan; Tonv Harris, Andrew Munro, Ross Saunders; Lamen Hohaia, Alastair Roberts: Bruce Deans; John Masefield; Loffhagen. Kerr, Greg Sparrow. Don Hayes (captain); Phil Waghorn. Matt Wilson, Kerry Paulin. Reserves: Kevin Rowe. Keith Henderson. Alan Bond. Alan Devlin: Rennie, Neil Evans. Mike Pdoley. Kevin Graham. Kieran Keane and Steve Scott have both withdrawn from- the Town reserves because of injuries. Their replacements are Craig Green and Steve Baker respectively.
