Gymnasts vie for positions

The first big gymnastic competition of the season in Canterbury — the Damax inter-club event — will be held at the Bryndwr Y.'M.C.A. tomorrow and Sunday.

Gymnasts from the elite grade to grade seven, and from as far afield as Nelson and Invercargill will be at the competition.

Senior gymnasts will be attempting to qualify for the New Zealand championships in Auckland. in August, and junior gymnasts will be seeking to qualify for the Canterbury junior championships, also in August. Only gymnasts ranked in the top 20 in each grade are eligible for the Canterbury junior championships.

There are more than 280 entries in the various grades, and there will be team and individual titles at stake.

The club earning the most points over the two days will receive the Burrows Shield, won last year by the Bryndwr Y.M.C.A. club.

Fiona Martin and Lisa Aldhamland, . two of Canterbury’s leading gymnasts, are among the entries. The pair recently represented the New Zealand under-14 team in Australia.

Bryndwr Y.M.C.A., Damax, Nelson, Avonhead, Rangiora and the Christchurch School of Gymnastics will be the leading contenders for the Burrow Shield.

Competition starts each day at 9 a.m. and finishes at 6 p.m.
