NZPA-Reuter Leeds England capitalised on the crucial advantage of winning the toss and emphatically beat India by nine wickets in the first one-day cricket international at Headingly yesterday. The new England captain, Bob Willis, put the touring team in to bat in conditions ideally suited to his quick bowlers and India was all out for 193 off the final ball of its 55 overs.

England found ■ batting much easier and swept to victory at 194 for one in 50.1 overs.

India’s total was more respectable than appeared likely when the all-rounder, lan Botham, took three wickets in ,12 deliveries and the touring side crashed to 68 for five, but Kapil Dev inspired a recovery by scoring a whirlwind 60 in 37 balls.

England was set firmly on course for success by an opening partnership of 133 between Barry Wood, who scored an unbeaten 78, and Chris Tavare, who made 66. The second and final match is at the Oval in T-ondon tomorrow.
