Drivers to claim rise of $35

PA Wellington Drivers said yesterdav that they would claim a fla’t $35 a week rise on all pav rates this vear.

The claim will be filed formally with the Arbitration Court and come up for negotiation on August 9.

This year will be the first in which a union in a main award will claim wage increases on a dollar basis in preference to percentage movements.

In the case of the drivers’ however. $35 a week equates to about a 20 per cent increase for lower-paid workers and between 15 and 16 per cent for the higher paid. Announcing the claim yesterday. the advocate for the Drivers’ Federation. Mr R. J. Campbell, said it was aimed to lower the pay margins between the lower and higher classfications in the general drivers’ award. The Employers' Federation was intrigued by the Drivers’ Federation wage claim, and had some sympathy for the concept of a flat rate dollar movement if it involved a sufficiently low figure, said the federation’s director- of advocacy. Mr Max Bradford. “There is no doubt that $35 is too high." he said.
