Union agrees to pay cut at Ocean Beach

The Meat Workers’ Union has agreed in principle to a

pay cut of 10 per cent for its members at the Ocean Beach freezing works. The move, seen as experimental, was confirmed by the union's secretary, Mr A. J. Kennedy, after a meeting of the union’s national management committee • . in Christchurch. The. cuts had been proposed by the Alliance Freezing Company (Southland), Ltd, which forecast a loss of $1.6 million when it took

over management- of the works in January.

The company. which opened its books’ to an accountant for the Otago-South-land branch of the union, hoped that the pay cuts would save about $1.6 million in running costs, and thus improve the financially troubled works. Mr Kennedy said that because of the "unique situation" at Ocean Beach, it was agreed that there should be some accommodation by the union.
