Determined N.Z. bid
NZPA Melbourne New Zealand racing connections seem more determined than ever to win the $310,000 Melbourne Cup in November. When the deadline for New Zealand and interstate entries closed on Tuesday there were 51 New Zealand entries compared with 46 last year. These do not include eight New Zealand horses entered from Queensland and Magistrate whose entry was lodged from the Melbourne area. The New Zealand list includes the Sydney Cup winner, Azawary, Prince Majestic (Tancred Stakes), Isle of Man (N.Z. and Wellington Derbys and Rosehill Guineas), Chimbu (Auckland Cup), Nearco King (Chalmers Handicap), Ruanuku (Wellington Cup) and Avitt (Prime Minister’s Cup, Southport).
The interstate entries include the Adelaide Cup
winner, Dealer’s Choice, and previous Melbourne Cup winners, Just A Dash (1981) and Hyperno (1979). Kingston Town and last year’s Victoria Derby winner, Brewery Boy, are among the New South Wales entries. Eleven internationally bred horses have been nominated, including the . Brisbane Cup favourite Almond Valley. ' This will be Magistrate’s fourth Melbourne Cup campaign. The dual Perth Cup winner is expected in Australia in mid-September and is recovering well from a chipped sesamoid bone which caused his withdrawal from the Sydney Cup. Magistrate’s previous Melbourne Cup attempts have produced an eighth, a fourth, and a thirteenth last year, when he got his tongue over the bit during the race.
