Mister Square sets record
PA Auckland Mister Square has broken the national mile record for a three-year-old trotter in a special time trial at Alexandra Park, beating Jenner’s mark of 2min 4.5 s set last season by seven-tenths of a second. He might well have returned a better time than 2min 3.8 s if he had not gone so fast over the first 800 m. Driven by his trainerdriver, Tony Milina, Mister Square ran the first half in a blistering imin 0.65. He nearly maintained this tempo with a 30.9 s quarter to the 1200 m mark. But the effort began to tell and he was struggling over the final 400 m in 32.35. Mister Square was assisted by Breconshire, driven by Frank Cooney, as galloping prompter. Milina said he had been urged by Cooney to go the first half in about Imin 2s. “It was good advice,” he said, “and if I had taken it Mister Square probably would have gone a faster time. “But I went so fast over the first half because I felt he was capable of going close to 2min. “I am not disappointed. My sole aim was to break the record.” Mister Square will now be turned out -fon about six weeks. Milina has no firm, plans for the colt after that.
