World Cup decision ‘up to N.Z.F.A.’

PA Wellington The Government would not tell the New Zealand Football Association whether the participate in the World Cup, said the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) yesterday. Mr Muldoon was responding to comments made by the chairman of the association, Mr Charlie Dempsey, at the week-end, that the associiatio'n would be guided by the Government regarding its participation in the light of the hostilities between Britain and Mr Dempsey, also the New Zealand World Cup Director, said last evening that, “We would have to be seen to be acting in the best interests of New Zealand." He had been asked to comment on reports that the World Cup stood in peril of disintegration. Mr Muldoon said, “I’ve seen some reports from Britain but the British Government takes the same view

as we do on these matters and at the moment it seems to be to me, very largely news media speculation. “As far as New Zealand is concerned, I haven’t the slightest doubt that having got as far as it did, in the manner it did, New Zealand is going to be in Spain. Certainly the Government wouldn’t attempt to dissuade it in any way,” Mr Muldoon said.
