South Ward election

Sir,—l feel that your readers should be aware that a supporter of Alister James, the Labour candidate in the South Ward by-election, is ringing people and asking how they will vote bn May 8. He is also alleging that the by-election is being imposed by Richard Bach, the Independent candidate. The by-election is the result of a petition signed by at least 5 per cent of the electors in the South Ward. Further, this person insists that a Labour person should be appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Cr Macfarlane, to save the ratepayers the expense of a byelection. The cost of the byelection can of course be absorbed into the council’s total budget, as it was in 1975, when the Pegasus Ward held a byelection after the death of Cr Massey. I am horrified by this assumption that money is more important than democracy.— Yours, etc., ANN CHRISTIAN. April 5, 1982.
