Footpath mess
Sir,—After enjoying 25 years in the real estate business and community affairs in Christchurch, I cannot leave without commenting on a sad-
dehing aspect of our city’s development. Cathedral Square is a focal point enjoyed by citizens and tourists. The improved area west of the Cathedral deserves praise; what one sees north-east of the Cathedral does not. Though reluctant to single but t one business when several may be 'affected, I must say that the mess of rubbish regularly bn the street and footpath . outside «; your office),’.'and. the. foul language and inconsiderate, sometimes offensive behaviour of some people attracted to thtjarea, are no credit..to the:city. Zoning classifications) may limit the power of the’ City Council to correct this. Our' city fathers should ask themselves: “Is' this situation in the best interests of the’' ‘Garden’ City?” If itis riot, I respectfully suggest they should amend our city by-laws accordingly.
