Property sales

Sir,—While one could have few quibbles over the benefits of Lyttelton as described in Patricia Herbert’s “Property boom in Lyttelton; port town revival” (March 25), one should add hastily that the property market there is no game for beginners. There are some things one should know. For instance, it is helpful to know that part of your new domain which the real estate agent happily presents to you might just be designated “road reserve” and you do not own it after all. It may just happen that you have an access path or road and it could just be that with your new antique purchase you have also inherited the right to fix it up. Or perhaps you find it immediately necessary to remove your stormwater from the section before it slips from its perch and you have to locate the drains. Well, good luck, they may have been laid 100 years ago and long since forgotten. Well you cannot have everything can you?—Yours, etc., CHARLES P. SEDGWICK. March 26, 1982.
