Dyslexia

Sir,—l hope that many people read the article in this week’s “Newsweek" (March 22) on dyslexia. This is one of a number of learning disabilities that are not catered for in our schools. Teachers are not taught how to cope with and help these children. Although

they are of average and above intelligence, they are written off as retarded. There is no screening programme for learning disabilities in schools. There is no communication of noticeable traits from kindergarten to primary school. Worst of all, these children are not allowed out of school to get special tuition from Speld teachers, who are certificated teachers specially trained to help this type of child. They have a right to learn in our public schools, but remedial work is not the answer for them. How can we get the Department of Education to recognise this problem? — Yours, etc., C. JONES.
