All-S.I. bowls final
PA Auckland George Folster. a retired Invercargill motor parts manager, relished the near-identical conditions to his own club greens at Waverley to win the national champion-of-champion singles bowls title at Papakura yesterday. In an all-South Island final of the Northern United tournament, he beat Des Knauf of the Highfield club in Timaru, 25-19.
He found the cotula at Papakura running very nicely and went out to a 13-4 lead after 10 ends. But Knauf, who has also retired from the motor trade — he ran his own motorcycle business in Timaru - fought back to be only 12-13 down. However, Folster won the title on the next three ends when he scored a three, a two and then a perfect four, to lead 22-12. Knauf surged again to 22-19 but then Folster rattled off the winning shots.
