Ten left in bowls

Ten teams may remain in the Christchurch pre-Easter fours bowls tournament —

the number left after three post-section rounds yesterday

— but, in truth, it is more a case of nine versus one.

The one skip who still stands out iri the crowd, as he has from the first delivery, is Morgan Moffat (Linwood). Unbeaten in section play, he sailed on towards the final with three more decisive wins yesterday, the last, 22-6, against a formidable opponent in Neville Poole (Sumner). Harold Fletcher (Canterbury) will be. Moffat’s next rival when the tournament resumes at Burnside next Saturday morning and if Moffat wins here he will confront either Keith Becker (Riccarton W.M.C.) or Bernie Johns (Christchurch). These will be the only games next Saturday morning; the other six survivors are through to the quarterfinals and they will begin at 12.15 p.m. The draw for these games is Wally Wilkinson (Beckenham) v. Ernie McCahon (Fendalton). Leon Jones (Southbridge) v. Harry Scrimgeour (Rangiora) and Arnold Memory (Woolston W.M.C.) v. John Gill (Papanui).

There were 73 qualifiers when the section rounds ended on Saturday.

Although most of the results yesterday were clearcut there were a few tight finishes. One worthy of note occurred at Woolston W.M.C.

McCahon. who has Wally Hadlee as his third, went into the last end three up against John Saundercock (Linwood)

— Saundercock and his third, Warren Fitchett. being second in this event, last year

— and when Saundercock came to play his last bowl he had two shots and a fair chance of getting the third he needed for an extra end. But Saundercock never had a chance with his last bowl — he put it away on the wrong bias!

Wilkinson, who must be favoured to meet Moffat in the semi-finals, made effective use of his drive to beat Peter Rose (Burnside) in a very good last-round match. With Rose also driving well, the head changed often, but Wilkinson edged away on the last three ends to.win, 1813.

Gill, a beaten finalist in the event in other years, looks well placed to do at least as well again. He had a tremendous battle against Jack Dale (South Brighton) before beating him. 12-10. but then his team played exceptionally well to down lan Scott (Dallington), 17-3. Post-section results were:— First round J. Steel (Burwood) 17. J. Simpson (St Martins) 14: D. Crombie (Fendallon) 14. J. Gowans (Riccarton Racecourse) 9; D. Page (Linwood) 12. A.
