First Addington drive fine feat

By

G. K. YULE

Simon Adlam will long remember his first drive at Addington Raceway. Yesterday he achieved a feat some with a lifetime in trotting have failed to secure when he drove Remote over one mile in Imin 59.95. Adlam, who recently joined the staff of Remote’s trainer, Murray Rennie, had the mare in the open early, but she worked to the front from Kotare Hunter with more than 1000 m left. Remote sprinted her last 400 m in 29.8 s and held out Kotare Hunter by half a length, with a head back to Treasurer at the end of one mile in Imin 59.95, only 0.6 s outside, her recent time in adverse conditions in a similar race. Remote is to travel north to Auckland today to race at Alexandra Park on Saturday.

The other mile trial was won with ease by Miss Bromac in 2min 5.35. She won by four lengths from Blow Wave. Kanku returned a performance of greater than average merit to win the Owners and Breeders’ Pace, the first $lOOO penalty-bearing race run at trials at Addington. Kanku broke at the start and John Versteeg settled the half-brother to Kanchu at the rear of the field. He sprinted up four and five wide from the 800 m, led with 250 m to run, and lasted it out well to beat Waihemo Lass by half a length. Thumbs Up was a head away third, with a length to Lassiter, which looked rather unlucky. The others headed by Boyden Logan, were beaten off. The winner took 3min 31.2 s for the 2600 m, the final 800 m in Imin 3.25.

Marshano, from Dick Prendergasts team, recorded a fast 3min 23.3 s for the 2600 in the mobile qualifying heat. This time has seldom if ever been beaten in such an event.

Gorgeous and Shoe Shine Mac also qualified. Jelly Bean qualified over 2600 m from a stand in 3min 31.65, while Ellen Foyle returned 3min 32.45. Light Mirgir, Lightning Bolt, Kine Aurea, Wary, Snow Schell and Autumn Star qualified over 2400 m, the fastest time of 3min 14.6 s was recorded by Light Mirgir. Novander, Shell Cree and First Row qualified in the event for the trotters, the winner returning 3min 38.25. lan Walker the trainer of Scotch Dale, was fined $5O for starting the horse in the mobile qualifying trial instead of a mobile mile race for which it was correctly

entered. Scotch Dale came in at No 3 at the barrier, forcing Captain Gay, which was correctly drawn in that position out of line. Captain Gay broke and took no part in the race.

The starter, Mr Jack Mulcahy was reprimanded for allowing Scotch Dale to start in its incorrect race.

Formal Fella, a member of Colin McLachlan’s, team, shaped most attractively when he won the heat for two-year-old colts and geldings. He was always clear of his rivals and won untested by 16 lengths from his stablemate, Mighty Me, with Timely Win a fair third, ahead of Hugo Porta. Formal Fella paced the 2000 m in 2min 39.7 s the last 800 m in 59.85.

Sea Witch ran out an easy winner in 2min 41s in the

first heat for two-year-old fillies. She set all of the pace and won handily in the hands of Geoff Small by nine lengths from Gillie’s Girl and Premier Glow.

Smooth Charm, from Erin Crawford’s team,, gained an all-the-way win in the second heat in a slowish 2min 45.75. However, she had plenty in reserve and won by two lengths from Westburn Win, with Whata Cutie finishing next, just ahead of Toliver Twiggy. Fallen Angel, trained by Stephen Murray, outfinished the pacemaker Gold and Black, in the other heat and won by half a length. Classy Lady look third a head away, with Armbro Speed and Harvest Gold dead-heating for fourth. The winner took 2min 42.7 s for the 2000 m, the final 400 m in 29.65.
