Australia finding snags in C.E.R.

PA Wellington New Zealand is ready to sign the Closer Economic Relations agreement but Australia is “giving us some difficulty,” according to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon). “It is curious that Australia ... is the one finding the most difficulty while we in New Zealand are ready to sign, having by one means or another, overcome most of the objections in this country,” he told the American Chamber of Commmerce in Wellington.

“Unfortunately, Australia with its federal system has a much more complex political system than New Zealand,” he said. “In some respects we are finding that political considerations are giving us some difficulty in the very late stages of our negotiations.” Three years of work had gone into the C.E.R.’negotiations, Mr Muldoon said. . He hoped to sign the agreement with the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) in early June this year.
