Heathcote ‘under stress’

The Woolston cut drainage scheme might be necessary as an integral part of the Christchurch Drainage Board’s proposals, board members were told yesterday. The chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board, Mr M. J. O. Dixon, said the Heathcote River catchment was “under stress.” Members of the two boards discussed the Drainage Board's report on the scheme. The Drainage Board’s deputy design and planning engineer, Mr I. C. Hunter,

said that about 40 houses in the region would'be affected by the cut. The houses were valued at $BOO,OOO. Two or three houses in the area have already been raised, and the Drainage Board proposes to negotiate on the raising of another 15. Mr T. N. D. Anderson said that there was a good case for some of the roads in the riverbank area to be stopped, because they were providing access only for residents. The Drainage Board’s design and' planning engineer, Mr P. J. Adams, said that the riverside roads were a prominent feature of the district scheme.
