3 p.c. cuts — P.M.

PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday that he had 3 per cent in mind as the figure for the Government’s cost-cutting campaign. The Associate Minister of Finance (Mr Falloon) said last week that cuts of up to 9 per cent could be achieved. But Mr Muldoon said yesterday: “three per cent is the figure, plus or minus. Some departments might not get

there, others will get more. The figure is 3 per cent.” Mr Muldoon said that three per cent had also been the figure used by Mr Fallodn, who had mentioned 9 per cent in “some context.” If Government departments could achieve 3 per cent savings “well and good,” he said. “Some of them have and some of them will. If they cannot get 3 per cent, and some of them will not, bad luck.”
