Ship’s cannon found
The barrel of a 175-year-old cannon, stolen from the Training Ship Cornwell at Redcliffs, more than two months ago, was found at Riccarton Racecourse on Saturday. The cannon, which once belonged to the Maori warrior chief, Te Rauparaha, was in good condition and will soon be back at the front of T.S. Cornwell, at 153 Main Road, Moncks Bay. The commanding officer of T.S. Cornwell (Lieutenant Commander M. M. Coleman) said that the cannon’s mounting would be rebuilt. “The barrel is;a type which has no rings to secure it,” he said. “We are going to remodel the mounting so that everything .can be chained in place.” S =
