Disco complaints

All-night outdoor discos at the Stoddarts Point picnic ground had disturbed residents, but the police had refused to do anything, the Lyttelton Borough Council’s works and reserves committee heard yesterday. The council's reserves superintendent, Mr F. D. Cronin, said that the disco organisers had been told to close at 12.30 a.m., and to keep the noise level down. “It appears that this was ignored,” Mr Cronin said. “Perhaps on any future occasions some control, such as a bond, may be desirable.”

The Lyttelton Town Clerk, • Mr D. Hillier, said that the police had told a complaining resident to “give a verbal two-finger sign” to the disco organiser. “The police said that they did not consider it to be a ‘disturbance,” he said. Committee members felt that nothing could be done about the disco at the moment, although Mr Hillier would probably be in touch with the police about the matter. Falling rocks Shrubs may be planted

near the Lyttelton entrance to the Tunnel road to stop falling rocks from damaging cars. Mrs M. Kay, of Ticehurst Road, Lyttelton, wrote to the council saying that children had thrown or dislodged rocks which had hit cars near the tunnel entrance. The committee recommended that Mr Cronin organise shrubs to be planted on the hillside by the road, and that the County Engineer, Mr J. H. Christensen, meet with Mrs Kay to discuss the problem.
