Wool Board support to the first day of a two-day Christchurch wool sale yesterday was negligible, and strong Halfbred fleece wools rose fully 5 per cent above those at the last fine wool sale in Dunedin on February 25. According to the official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Woolbuyers' Association, the board only had less than one per cent sold or passed to it. Strong and extra strong Halfbred fleece wools were up to 5 per cent on Dunedin, a small quantity of Merino was in sellers’ favour, fine Halfbred fleece wool was firm and medium was in sellers’ favour. Haifbred skirtings were firm but oddments were up to 5 per cent dearer. . Compared with the Auckland sale on February 26. yesterday's market was fully 2.5 per cent dearer in fine and’ medium crossbred. up to 2.5 per cent dearer in strong crossbred, second shear in sellers' favour, crossbred lambs also in sellers’ favour and skirtings and oddments firm. The board only bid on 4 per cent of the offering, or 809 bales. "The offering for the first day of a two-day sale consisted of 19.858 bales drawn from the Canterbury Plains. Marlborough. Nelson, and West Coast. "Very few of the fleece wools were attractive: many were of reasonable colour but very heavy in condition. Other wools showed extensive yolk discolouration with a large percentage being cotted,” said the report. "A large quantity of lambs wool was offered in all qualities and lengths. Very few were of good to super , style, the bulk being average to good with some lots spoilt by containing seed or vegetable matter. “As usual, lack of proper shed preparation by not eliminating a few discoloured pieces brought about a lower price for some lots. "General competition prevailed with keen demand on strong Halfbred fleece. Principal buyers were Western and Eastern Europe, supported by the Far East and local mills." the report said.
