New ‘topless’ law
Sir,—The correspondence on this topic has been interesting if somewhat puzzling in that in spite of their convictions noone has answered my third question, which is: Can it be shown that in societies where bare breasts are normal that women suffer sexual molestation and violence to any greater degree than those in so-called civilised societies? A hundred years ago, the sight of a naked ankle was considered immodest and likely to “awaken the beast" in a man yet “having his way with her” was common in those days. The only things which seem to have changed in this respect are the law, which now makes it possible to prosecute the rapist, and the compassionate, dedicated women who set up rape crisis centres to help the victims overcome their distress. — Yours, etc., JILL DANDO.
