Muir Park

Sir,—Although unable to attend the meeting held at Halswell on February 10 concerning Muir Park, I understand

that it was far from a “battle” as headlined by your reporter; from several people attending this meeting I have learned that it was unanimously agreed that the adventure-playground as planned by the Paparua County Council was unacceptable. Many people in the vicinity feel as I do, that it is quite unnecessary to change an already delightful nature park — which is equally enjoyed by all members of the local community — into a vandals’ paradise. The people of Halswell are keen to retain good relationships and are, I believe, making every effort to resolve this matter in a friendly manner.— Yours, etc., MRS E. J. HAMMOND. February 11, 1982.

Sir,—Last night’s meeting of residents concerning Baisweil's Muir Park was neither a “battle” nor a “tug-of-war,” as reported in “The Press.” The meeting aimed to find areas of agreement on which to approach the Paparua County Council. In this respect unanimous resolutions were passed as follows: The meeting: (1) Expressed dissatisfaction with the draft management plan; (2) Requested that Muir Park be retained as a small neighbourhood reserve; (3) Rejected barbecue facilities; (4) Rejected flying foxes as per management plan; (5) Objected to scale, scope and location of play equipment as shown on management plan. Loss of confidence in the local council was expressed, as people felt their submissions made last year had been disregarded. It was clear that local residents desire to have a voice in the management of their environment and not be bulldozed by the “vast bureaucratic machine.” Such concern shows a healthy community spirit which we, in Halswell, intend to nurture.—Yours, etc.,

KATRINA BREHAUT (Mrs). February 11, 1982.
