Librarians
Sir,—l read with interest the opinion of the New Zealand Library Association “More librarians wanted” (“The Press,” February 11). As an English graduate who. has been unsuccessfully attempting to find work in a library for several months I have discovered several seeming contradictions in the policy of the N.Z.L.A. The only professional training available is in Wellington, either at the department of librarianship of the University of Victoria, or at Wellington Teachers’ College. However, these institutions prefer to accept people already engaged in library work, while libraries prefer to employ people with professional qualifications. The N.Z.L.A. is Correct in believing that New Zealand needs more professionally trained librarians, but how are they to be trained in the “Catch 22” situation which now exists? — Yours, etc.,
(Mrs) ROBYN STEWART. February 11, 1982.
